Free JSON tools for development
The free JSON workspace is a browser-based helper for formatting, minifying, validating, comparing and redacting JSON. Developers can inspect responses, freelancers can prepare reviewable examples, and everyday users working with exported settings can explore a collapsible tree. No account or payment is required. Processing is local, but the tool is not a JSON Schema validator or a guaranteed secret-removal service.
For developers: inspect before you edit
Paste input or open a JSON file, then validate it. Native parsing checks syntax, and the tool applies numeric safety checks. A valid result does not prove that an API accepts the payload or that the application's required properties are present. If parsing fails, inspect quotation marks, commas and matching brackets. There is no automatic repair button.
Formatting produces two-space indentation; minifying removes optional serialization whitespace. Tree view offers expandable objects and arrays. It is an inspection view, not an editable tree or a query language. These operations create output in the page and do not overwrite the file stored on your computer.
Compare values rather than formatting
A semantic comparison ignores the order of object properties. An object with id followed by active is equal to one with active followed by id when the values match. If active changes from true to false, the report includes that value change with a path. Added and removed properties are recorded separately.
Arrays compare by position. Reordering a list can therefore produce several changes even if it contains the same items. Do not interpret the result as matching records by an internal ID. For CSV exports where a stable unique column identifies a record, the separate CSV comparison workflow may better describe the change you are trying to inspect.
For freelancers: prepare a safer example for a client
Before sharing an API response in a ticket, list the exact field names to hide. If the list contains email and token, nested matching properties have their values replaced with [REDACTED]. Matching is case-insensitive, so TOKEN is included. It traverses arrays and objects, but a property named access_token does not match token automatically.
A secret inside a notes string is not detected. Review URLs, free text, unexpected field names and nested values yourself. Redaction is a review aid, not guaranteed anonymization. It reads the first input, so copying a previous output back into that input may be necessary if you intentionally want another operation to use it. Never assume the buttons form an automatic transformation chain.
For everyday users: preserve identifiers
An ID such as 9007199254740993 should be represented as a quoted string. The tool rejects unsafe parsed integer values and non-finite numbers. Decimals still follow JavaScript number precision. Repeated keys in one object keep the final value when parsed; formatting does not recover an earlier occurrence.
Use Download JSON to save the displayed result, or Copy output when clipboard access is available. If the browser refuses clipboard access, select the text and copy manually. Clear all removes the visible input, output and tree from the workspace. Saved downloads are separate files and remain on your device.
Limits and issue reporting
Large documents depend on available memory, and very deep nesting can exceed recursion limits. There is no cloud history or collaborative editing. This is a debugging utility rather than a lossless archive parser, business-rule checker or schema validator. Keep an untouched source when exact original text is important.
For support, choose JSON workspace on Contact and describe the operation, browser and visible error. Include a minimal invented input if it helps explain the problem. Remove tokens and personal details before sending anything: contact messages leave the browser through the email form service even though tool processing is local. The guide explains syntax, comparison and redaction controls in order.
A free developer handover with explicit redaction
Consider a test response containing a customer object with email and token properties, plus a nested metadata object. Entering email and token as redaction names targets those exact property names recursively. It does not recognize a secret inside a message string or guess that accessToken is equivalent to token. Review the entire resulting document before sharing it. For issue reports, invented examples are safer than relying on automatic redaction to sanitize production records.
A freelancer can format a client's authorized sample, compare it with the previous response and explain the differences in the handover. A developer can distinguish an object-key ordering change from a changed value through the semantic comparison. An everyday user can use formatting and the tree to inspect a configuration file, then download a copy. These actions are free, but valid syntax alone does not prove that a configuration satisfies the receiving application's rules.
What bulk means for JSON
A JSON array can contain many objects inside one document, and the workspace can process that supplied document within browser limits. There is no multi-file queue, directory upload, scheduled processing or server API. Describe the deliverable as a formatted or compared document, rather than promising an automated bulk service. Keep identifiers that exceed safe JavaScript integer precision as strings in source data and inspect decimal values when exact arithmetic matters. If a tab becomes unresponsive, return to a smaller representative sample. The tool makes common inspection tasks accessible without a login; it cannot guarantee every input fits memory or that every deeply nested structure can be displayed.
